NAUTILUS | symbol of life’s unfolding mysteries
The chambered nautilus is perhaps the most well known species of nautilus and it has inspired artists for centuries. The chambers that can be seen in the shell are created by the growing cephalopods throughout their lifetime. As they grow, they create and move into new chambers, sealing the older, smaller chambers behind them. The lining of the resulting shell is iridescent and forms a nearly perfect equiangular spiral.
The ever-evolving nature of the marine mollusks and the beautiful and unique appearance of the inner and outer shells that they leave behind have fascinated us since we began collecting gemstones.
