DENDRITIC AGATE

One of the most captivating aspects of dendritic agate is the tree-like markings, or dendrites, found throughout the translucent chalcedony gemstone. These iron or manganese inclusions within the stone often resemble organic plant material and expertly cut dendritic agates can often bear a striking resemblance to a landscape painting.

The contrast between the deep black dendrites and the white chalcedony in these gemstones have an effect that could be compared to viewing a North American winter landscape in the hours just before sunrise and sunset. Other dendritic agate gemstones are abundant with black dendrites and can be described as being reminiscent of the ground being uncovered by a blanket of snow during the spring thaw.
