AMETHYST | stone of balance and inner peace

The birthstone for the month of February is Amethyst. The name “amethyst” comes from the Greek word “amethystus” which means “not drunk” and it has long been a symbol of sobriety. According to Greek mythology a young maiden named Amethyst incurred the wrath of the intoxicated God Dionysus. The Goddess Diana turned the girl into pure white quartz in order to protect her from Dionysus’s fury. At the sight of the quartz, Dionysus felt remorse for his actions and his tears dripped into his goblet of red wine. The goblet fell over and the red wine spilt onto the white mineral. The mineral absorbed the colour and became the purple quartz that is now known as amethyst. Amethyst, the suggested gift for the 4th and 6th wedding anniversary, is a very popular mineral because of its unique purple colour. Amethyst is always purple but it does come in varying shades of the hue with desirability often being based on cut and colour quality of the stone.
